While they are traveling the bottom of your pool they are sucking in the cold water then they send it through your return jets to the top of the water for the sun to heat it back up.

So to answer the question are automatic cleaners worth the money? Absolutely, all three types have their own pros and cons depending on your needs and budget but every pool owner should have an automatic pool cleaner.
